Meet Mart Hoogvliet

“A room without books, is like a body without a soul”

Hi, I’m Mart. I’m 24 years old and I live in Utrecht. After I finished secondary school, I studied International Business & Management for six months at the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. However, I soon discovered that the social contacts I made there and the diversity of those contacts (we had 10 different nationalities in my year) were much more interesting than actually sitting in class. Added to that, lots of things were happening in my private life at the time and I completely lost interest in my studies. So I dropped out of college and started applying for jobs. After several pretty uninteresting jobs, I ended up working for a door-to-door sales company that sold energy contracts. I worked there for exactly one year.

Happy I called Jelle

And then I and a colleague of mine decided to set up our own business and do the same work. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as we had hoped, but I learned an enormous amount during that time. So I’m really glad I did it. After that adventure, I decided to apply for another job, this time with an acquisition agency (B2B). They gave me plenty of opportunities there and I was able to really develop myself. In the 5 years that I worked there, I progressed from being a acquisition manager to a project manager. I was a project manager there for over 2 years. That’s how I got to know Jelle, Wilko and Henk, because ValueBlue was one of my customers at the time.

After 5 years, I was ready for a new challenge. Thanks to my great working relationship with ValueBlue and my positive impression of the company, I decided to call Jelle to ask him if there might be a place for me at ValueBlue. That was six months ago, and here I am! So I’m very happy I called Jelle.

No longer possible to work from your ivory tower

I think we have lots of very different people working at ValueBlue, but we all share certain qualities: Ambitious, social, creative and the will to help each other. You see these qualities in everybody here and that makes it a great environment to work in. On top of that, I really like the fact that everybody in the company is given so much responsibility. Personally, I’d go absolutely crazy if there was always somebody looking over my shoulder telling me how to do something, when and for how long. The principle of ‘Jump! How high?’ has never worked for me. And not only is there space to contribute your own ideas and be creative, you’re actually encouraged to do these things!

BlueDolphin is a product I really believe in. I absolutely love the original idea/concept – using the knowledge in your organization in the best way possible, with everybody involved – because I really believe in it. With today’s incredibly fast and exponential rate of change, it’s no longer possible to work from your ivory tower. You simply have to be flexible if you want to be successful as a company, and you need everybody on your side to achieve that. I think BlueDolphin facilitates that as a solution and is unique in the way it does it.

I believe the company will be the market leader in 5 years’ time and that we’ll have offices all over the world. As part of my job, I talk to lots of people in all kinds of companies and they often mention the same problems or issues. Those problems were the reason why BlueDolphin was developed in the first place. I think that as a collaborative platform we have a unique proposition, and the amazing growth we’re experiencing right now won’t stagnate any time soon. The market is based on the principle of supply and demand. I believe that when BlueDolphin was devised around 6 years ago, it provided the solution to a primary problem for many different organizations.

“You can never go wrong with pasta”

I like the quote: “A room without books is like a body without a soul” from Marcus Tulius Cicero for 2 reasons. Firstly, because I really admire Cicero, who I think was the best orator that ever lived. I’m fascinated by his monologues and writings and the way they’ve stood the test of time. He once made an opening statement in a court case that lasted for almost 5 hours. Different sources have confirmed that everybody who heard it was captivated from start to finish. It’s amazing that someone has the ability to do that. And I don’t think there’s anybody alive today with a talent like that. I also really like stories and I love reading. So as you can imagine, I can’t help but agree wholeheartedly with this quote. I feel I’m really missing something if I don’t have the possibility to momentarily lose myself in another world, in another reality.

The most special person in my life? I have the good fortune to have not just 1 special person in my life, but 4: my sister, my mother, my father and my best friend. All of them are special for different reasons, but they definitely are the most important people in my life. My favorite food: You can never go wrong with pasta. As easy or as complicated as you want to make it. Although I have to say that if somebody else is cooking (I have lots of great cooks around me), I like to be surprised…
