How BlueDolphin improves cloud migrations

Practically every organization has experienced many times how migrating to a new IT platform is such an enormous and risky task; something, however, that has to be done every so many years and requires a lot of sorting out and effort.  Because of its complexities, this demands a great deal of time and energy from the organization which often ends up not having time for its normal daily tasks. In this article, we explain why it is worth investing in cloud migration when implementing good Enterprise Architecture practices.

Compared with the traditional periodic migrations that you are accustomed to, a migration to the cloud is a little more complex. In addition to the transfer of the on-premise environment to the new platform, which brings uncertainty regarding the functioning and continuity, there is the change in the way of working in the cloud, therefore after the migration.

The cloud is much more fluid than an on-premise environment. Once in the cloud, there are no longer periodic large-scale migrations, but constant small updates. The cloud is always at the latest revision level of the supplier, for all customers. And as a user, you have to move along with this. This saves you carrying out those periodic major migrations; however, at the same time it also requires a totally different way of working, aimed at constantly updating environmental variables, applications and administration knowledge.

Because most organizations choose not one cloud provider but several, this leads to integration issues and the need to acquire the necessary knowledge of various cloud environments. After the transition to the cloud, the focus generally shifts from infrastructure or platform management to the integration of applications and data.

Other important aspects in the cloud are cost management versus privacy and security. After all, you want to arrange suitable privacy and security at an optimum price. In order to be able to choose and maintain the most suitable configuration it is necessary to know what requirements are involved in applications and data when it comes to availability and security. In this way, the chosen configuration is not too limited, but also not too extensive (expensive). In order to know what requirements the applications and data storage in the cloud have to meet, it is necessary to know what the applications do and what sort of data we are dealing with. Knowledge of the application functionalities, processes and capabilities that are supported with these applications and data is vital to this.

It is therefore essential prior to the migration to have a good overview of the current IT landscape and how this supports the business operations. This includes a picture of how these are related to and dependent upon one another, as well as knowledge regarding the portability of current applications and data to the chosen cloud platforms. This knowledge is important in ensuring that the migration proceeds smoothly, as well as guaranteeing appropriate security and availability after the migration.

An added benefit of mapping out the current IT landscape and how this supports the business operations is that this also forms a good basis for supporting other work areas. And with little extra effort one can also clearly identify which applications and data do not need to be migrated. Most organizations, after all, have far more applications than they really need. Applications that are either not used or have an overlapping functionality can be rationalized and don’t need to be migrated, if these can be identified in advance. Practice has shown that organizations can make considerable savings in the migration costs as a result, and then afterwards in the platform and management costs. If this is carried out straightaway in a clear process before applications are purchased and phased out, the foundation for Application Portfolio Management will already have been created.

By establishing the processes and the relationships with applications, you also take the first steps in optimizing processes with Business Process Management, whilst describing the data forms a good basis for the further development towards Master Data Management. Describing the architecture for a cloud migration is therefore not a waste of time after the migration either!

In 2019, the German company AMR Research carried out research into Cloud migrations. This company’s research revealed that 97% of decision makers turned out to have had other strategic considerations during their first Cloud migration.

BlueDolphin, the collaboration platform in the areas of ‘Business Process Management’, ‘Enterprise Architecture’ and ‘Data Management’, enables you to acquire the necessary insights into the IT landscape, the application landscape, the data and the business processes including relevant mutual relationships and dependencies. In this way, you can identify how the processes are supported by applications and data, as well as which applications turn out to be unnecessary, and what bottlenecks you can expect when you transfer your legacy from on-premise to the cloud.

It was in the heads of only a few employees

In 2018, Alfa Accountants, a national accountancy firm with 34 branches operating throughout the Netherlands, used BlueDolphin for its Cloud migration. When they mapped out their application landscape, they discovered for example that they used 10 scanning/recognition applications, whilst only 3 were necessary. Not only did they save costs on the license fees for these applications, but it also resulted in cost savings in Cloud storage as the superfluous applications did not need to be migrated and afterwards processed in the Cloud.

RNHB, property investor for both private individuals and the professional market, used BlueDolphin for a smooth Cloud migration. They discovered that many business processes had actually not been developed and were mainly “in the heads of only a few employees.” And now, according to RNHB, they have an accurate overview of their processes and systems whenever they need it.  It is now crystal clear how all our processes, systems and applications function and work together. This insight is priceless.”

Are you planning a Cloud migration, and want that to go as smoothly as possible? Make sure you have a clear picture of your IT landscape and how this supports your business operations. Because only when you know your starting point and what you need for what purpose, you can effectively set off towards your desired situation. BlueDolphin can help you with this.
